Fields of Conflict Launches

9 January 2009

We are proud to announce the launch of Fields Conflict, a company dedicated to commemorate and celebrate the role of played by people from all parts of the island of Ireland while serving in the British Armed Forces.

People from both parts of Ireland have over centuries formed the backbone of the British Army. This island, north and south has produced the finest soldiers, and Generals from Wellington to Montgomery.

In recent years there has been a growing recognition in the south of Ireland of the role played by soldiers from that part of the island in the Great War and other conflicts. But as the controversy over recent remarks by Irish President Mary McAleese illustrates, that part of our shared history remains a sensitive area for many. By visiting the battlefields, Fields of Conflict aims to focus on the human stories and the heroism and sacrifice of those men and women who fought and died together, side by side.

In doing so it will help create a better understanding between the communities in Northern Ireland and between people from both parts of the island. The launch will take place at 11:00am on Thursday 15th January at the War Memorial Buildings, 21 Talbot Street, Belfast.

“It would be a fine memorial to the men who died if we could build a bridge between North and South”
